Super League

The York Wednesday Pool Super League returned this week after the team week break. As always, there were some narrow wins, proving that each team is relentlessly pushing to make their mark on the Super League.

Beginning with UptheBish against Burton Warriors, the game seemed balanced throughout, finishing in a 7-5 for Bish. As it stands, this places Bish joint second with Huntington WMC C. Bish’s Phil Appleton, Rob Barron and Alice Paylor claimed 2 frames each.

Alice recently returned from the 2025 European Blackball Championship, with the England Ladies A taking home the win over Wales A in the final – massive congratulations!

Over at Clockhouse, the Clockhouse A v Dick Turpin A fixture ended in a 6-6 draw. Another close game throughout, with Dick Turpin’s strong performance seeming like they were taking the win, before wins from Clockhouse’s Martin Oxberry and Danny Bodden at the end helping prevent a Dick Turpin victory. This places Dick Turpin at the top of the table on 45 points. Dick Turpin’s Matt Johnston had a dish, putting him second in the dish table behind Paul Mahoney of Heworth A.

Clockhouse P and Huntington WMC A also had a close game, with the Clockhouse home team taking a 7-5 win. A strong performance from Clockhouse’s Gary Pearce saw him with a 3-win contribution to the team, with one of the frames being a dish. There were 4 back-to-back frames won by Huntington towards the end of the fixture in an attempt to claim a draw.

All the Super League Clockhouse teams were at home, with the Clockhouse Z’s against Bishopthorpe SC A.The game saw another 7-5 win for the Clockhouse team. Bishopthorpe’s Kwai Mo certainly had a strong performance, winning 3/5 frames for the team.

In Huntington, the B team delivered a great performance to beat The Hammers 8-4. The match saw a reverse dish from Huntington’s Clive Hartley, with Cliff Dalton, Chris Tate and Enzo Cupaiolo winning two frames each. Lance Cameron won 2/4 for The Hammers. Huntington gave their Player of the Match to Lewis Hullah.

There were plenty of reverse dishes in the league this week, with Si Calvert from Huntington WMC C claiming one in the fixture against the Lighthorseman. The match was a strong showing for Huntington, beating the Fulford based side 8-4. Huntington’s Keith Thornton contributed 3/8 match wins, also gaining the Player of the Match from the opposing team.

Another close fixture over at the York Hospital Club saw Heworth A take home a 7-5 win. For Heworth, Paul West, Steve Thomas and Simon Recchia contributed two wins each, with the Hospital Club awarding Simon Recchia the Player of the Match. Dale Carlyle took the title of Player of the Match from the away side.

Division 2

The five fixtures played in Division 2 this week were exciting ones, with some big wins, and some very close games.

Starting with the Crescent A and the Bay Horse, which saw a close game throughout, eventually concluded in a 6-6 draw. This puts the Crescent in 3rd place in the league table with 44 points, behind clear leaders Clockhouse B (56 points) and Edinburgh Arms A (45 points).

The Edinburgh Arms brought a significantly smaller team compared to usual. However, the team was very strong, taking a strong 10-2 win over Lawrence 8 Ballers. The Edinburgh aptly awarded Ricky Holloway as their Player of the Match, due to him winning the 2 frames for the 8 Ballers.

Over in Heworth, the home side Heworth A claimed an 8-4 victory over The Hogs Head A. There were strong performances all round, with Heworth’s Martin Usher reverse dishing in the 6th frame. Heworth awarded their opposition Player of the Match to Steve Lake.

A huge 11-1 win for Clockhouse B over at the More Mitre continues Clockhouse’s unbeaten streak. This week, the only Clockhouse side not at home was the one with the biggest victory!

At the Clifton Hotel, the fixture against Rack’Em Up and the Edinburgh Legs was an exciting one. The Legs took a 6-0 lead, with Rack Em’Up fighting back, winning 5 frames in a row. Edinburgh Legs’ Arran Armstrong played the last fixture to secure a 7-5 win for the Legs. Clifton awarded Legs’ Jack Wetwood as their Player of the Match, with Daniel Thompson claiming the away Player of the Match.

Last week, Haxby Sports Bar and The Ozzy Osbournes played this fixture in the week off, seeing another close game ending in a 6-6 draw. Division 3

There were only 4 matches played in Division 3 last night. The division had been more active the week before, with 5 of the previous week’s postponed matches being played.

The outcome of the matches from last week saw things becoming even tighter at the top, with just 2 points separating the top 5 teams. Huntington Sports Club A became the new leaders with a tightly fought 7-5 win over The Windmill. Former table toppers, Touching Cloth were dispatched 8-4 by The Hogs Head B. Both those teams and the Hammers Too then shared 2nd spot. The Hammers Too lost 7-5 to the Crescent B, Clockhouse W beat the Ainsty 8-4, and the Hospital Club B and Huntington Sports Club B shared the spoils with a 6-6 draw. Danny James, of the Sports Club A opened a 2-point gap at the top of the Player of the Season table.

This week, the Hogs Head B grabbed the headlines as a comprehensive 10-2 win over Clockhouse W shot them to the top of the table, with a 3-point cushion, for the time being at least. The Hogs Head seem to be in good form as they were 7th 2 weeks ago. For them, Rich Guest, Andy McDonald and Alan Boyd each won all their 3 frames.

The Crescent B moved up into 2nd spot with a good 8-4 win at the Beagle B. Warren Mead and Peter Yates both won their 2 frames for the Crescent.

The shock result of the round was previous leaders Huntington Sports Club A losing 8-4 at home to the Hospital Club B, who were down to 3 players. Clark Todd and Dean Lonsdale played a blinder for them, each winning 3 of the first 10 frames, shooting them into an unassailable 8-2 lead.

In the other match played last night, two of the lower placed teams in the division had a closely fought battle. The home team, the Ainsty, came out on top against the Beagle A with a 7-5 win. For the Ainsty, Simon Brind and James Boyes both won their 2 frames, whilst Patrick Deer and Brad Kelly won their 2 for the Beagle.

Danny James of Huntington Sports Club A still leads the Player of the Season standings. He’s been joined on 11 points by Warren Mead of the Crescent B. They have a 2-point cushion over the pack.
