Champions Clockhouse A Start Strong as Super League Kicks Off

The opening night of the Ultra Fabrication York Pool Super League didn’t disappoint Huntington WMC C started their campaign strongly with a narrow 7–5 away win at newly promoted Bishopthorpe SC A. In a closely fought contest, their ability to edge the key frames made the difference on the night.

Clockhouse A made home advantage count, powering past Lighthorseman with a confident 8–4 display. With the game balanced at 4–4, the return of Dan Potter and his wins in frames nine and ten swung momentum, giving the champions a 6–4 lead. Daniel Witcombe then completed the job by taking the final two frames, sealing the 8–4 victory. A solid all-round team performance sees the reigning champions off to a flying start.

The second match at Clockhouse was a much tighter affair, but the hosts made it a double celebration as Clockhouse P edged out Huntington WMC B 7–5 in a contest that swung back and forth all evening.

Dick Turpin A also impressed with a strong 8–4 home win over newly promoted The Hammers. They set the tone early and never looked back, finishing the night as one of the biggest winners.

On the road, Heworth A showed their credentials by travelling to Huntington WMC A and coming away with an excellent 7–5 victory. With the scores at 6–4, Huntington pushed hard for a comeback, but Paul Mahoney’s composure in the closing frames sealed the points for the visitors.

York Hospital Club A rounded off the night with a solid 8–4 win against promoted Burton Warriors. A dominant start gave them breathing space, and they held firm to take the victory.

The return of Division 2 promised to be an exciting one - with an immediate Mitre derby, some last minute changes to team names, and recently promoted teams The Hogs Head and The Bay Horse hoping to make their mark on Division 2.

Kicking off with the Mitre derby, a great performance from More Mitre sees a 9-3 victory, with both Connor Calland and Graham Carling claiming 3 frames in the derby, resulting in Connor as rewarded the Player of the Match.

The new to Division 2 Clockhouse B team took the league by storm, with a 10-2 victory over The Hogs Head. The match included a dish from Clockhouse’s Rich Millett, epitomising a successful first away game for the new team.

The Crescent A team secured a 7-5 victory over Heworth B, with both teams finishing 3rd and 5th last season respectively. A promotion chase could be amidst these teams this season, and such a close game reveals these could be the teams posing a tough challenge to Division 2. Heworth’s Martin Usher secured a reverse dish in the final frame of the match. The Crescent’s Lucas Bingham contributed immensely to the final victory for The Crescent, winning all frames to secure the Player of the Match.

The Edinburgh Arms A faced The Cross Keys Dunnington, whose team have changed from their previous venue in Elvington this season. The most notable part of the match was a break dish by the Edinburgh Arms’ Vice-Captain Jack Colding, his first dish in the league. The Edinburgh Arms secured a comfortable 8-4 victory to start off their season, with captain Jammy Clark commenting on the strong performance of his team.

After much confusion about who the real Edinburgh Arms A team was last season, the renamed Edinburgh Arms B side aimed to clutch a win against the Lawrence 8 Ballers, gaining a 7-5 victory aided mainly by  Jack Wetwood and Lewis Ramsey, who won all of their matches.

The last minute team name swap from the Osbaldwick Sports Club to the Ozzy Osbornes appeared to motivate the side to claim a comfortable 8-4 win at home to The Bay Horse. However, the Ozzy Osbornes commented on the brilliant standard of the team, noting them as ones to watch as the league progresses.

Next week sees the Edinburgh Arms derby, with the A’s seeking revenge for their derby defeat last season, and more exciting fixtures to keep an eye out for as the league progresses.

In division 3, The Rec (Dan Steel and Chris Brown winning all 3 of their frames), the Hammers Too (Gary Gibson with 3)

The Crescent B (Ralph Lowes with 3) got off to cracking starts with 9-3 wins.

Clockhouse K and Hogshead B (formerly New Earswick) only a point behind with 8-4 wins. Huntington Sports Club A came from behind to beat Saddle Inn and Hospital Club B and  new boys Ainsty shared the spoils.
